Why Injury Prevention for Yoga?

This training will take a deep dive into human anatomy & physiology, injury prevention, and how to better assist students in creating the best practice that works for their bodies.

We’ll unpack the phrase “listen to your body” to provide valuable context and actionable tools for students to better connect with themselves. Learn the most common injuries in yoga, the mechanisms by which they can occur, and the steps to decrease the risk of these injuries. We’ll take a detailed look into the most common injuries students come in with (pre-existing) and how this may affect mechanics and practice. Within each condition, there will be plenty of variations/options provided to work around injuries to assist students in enjoying a safe practice (and understanding why these variations are beneficial). We’ll also explore language/verbiage ideas to help your students connect with their bodies, tips for promoting safe practice environments, and staying within the scope of work as a yoga teacher.

Written through the lens of a physical therapist, yoga teacher, and fitness instructor, this course will enable you to better assist students in finding comfortable variations to work around existing injuries and prevent new injuries in yoga. There are no prerequisites for this course; however, a basic understanding of common yoga poses and basic anatomy is helpful as background knowledge.

Your Instructor

Maura is a physical therapist with over 15 years of experience in orthopedic rehabilitation and clinical teaching, an RYT 500 yoga teacher, and a certified group fitness instructor.

After graduating from MVP’s 200 & 300 hr yoga teacher training programs, she knew she wanted to combine her experience across these disciplines to share a fresh perspective on injury prevention in movement practices.

She has been practicing yoga for many years and turns to the practice for its grounding, stress-relieving, and mind-body connection benefits. Maura truly believes that movement is medicine and enjoys empowering students and teachers through education and encouragement to approach each person’s practice as a unique experience.

Maura has experience teaching virtually and in person and enjoys incorporating elements of yoga into her physical therapy treatments. She also writes a wellness blog sharing education and injury prevention tips for yoga, fitness, and everyday life.
